Google opens AI campus in Camden to equip UK students with digital skills

December 5, 2024

Google has officially launched its AI Campus in Somers Town, Camden, as part of its mission to enhance digital skills and empower the next generation to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI).

The campus, developed in collaboration with Camden Council and Camden Learning, marks the start of an ambitious two-year pilot programme. It aims to provide local sixth-form students with cutting-edge AI resources and mentorship from experts at Google, Google DeepMind, and other industry leaders.

The programme will immerse students in real-world projects, demonstrating AI’s potential in fields such as healthcare, social sciences, and the arts. By addressing pressing local and global challenges, students will gain hands-on experience in leveraging AI for meaningful impact.

Google’s initiative places a strong emphasis on inclusion, with the inaugural cohort of 32 students reflecting Camden’s diverse post-16 population. Particular focus has been given to underrepresented groups, including those eligible for Free School Meals, ensuring that the benefits of this programme are accessible to all.

From mid-2025, the AI Campus will extend its reach beyond the initial pilot group, offering out-of-school learning opportunities to more students in Camden. These will include digital skills training, AI masterclasses, and foundational education in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

In addition to the Camden-focused programme, Google announced a major funding boost for the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Experience AI initiative. With over £865,000 ($1 million) in funding, the partnership with Google DeepMind aims to deliver teacher training and expand AI education to an additional 250,000 students across the UK by 2026.
